UAB Drops Decision To #17 Alabama at Regions Field

BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA - March 12, 2025
For the most part, UAB found a way on Tuesday night to minimize Alabama’s ability to score runs in a non-conference baseball game at Regions Field. However, there wasn’t anything the Blazers could do defensively when one of the nation’s best power-hitting lineups did what they do best in their final at-bat.
Alabama used a pair of ninth inning home runs – a solo shot to dead center by Jason Torres and a two-run blast by Kade Snell – to walk away with a 6-3 win over a UAB team looking for a second consecutive Tuesday victory over a nationally ranked team from the state.
Up until that point, it was missed opportunities by 17th ranked Alabama that shaped the game. The Crimson Tide stranded 11 runners over the first eight innings and 13 overall. UAB (13-4) had something to do with the missed opportunities.
UAB centerfielder Logan Braunschweig raced to the deepest part of the ballpark in the top of the 7th inning, jumped over the fence and grabbed what would have been Jason Lebron’s 12th homer this season. Two innings later, Braunschweig collided with the wall after racing down what would have been a leadoff extra base hit by Coleman Mizell with the game tied 3-3. The Blazers also had inning-ending double plays with runners in scoring position in the fourth and sixth innings and wiggled out of jams in the seventh and eighth innings with clutch pitching.
The Blazers needed all of that to hang in the game on a night when they were outhit, 15-5.
Alabama (17-1) did manage to build a 3-0 lead on a sole home run by Bryce Fowler in the third inning and RBI singles by Fowler and Mizell in the fifth inning. UAB battled back to trim the deficit in 5th inning on a RBI double by Jaden Anderson, who later scored on a pair of passed balls by Aidan Moza, who played for the Blazers in 2022.
UAB tied the game with a RBI single by Tyler Waugh in the sixth inning. Todd Clay, who reached on a fielders choice and stole second, scored on Waugh’s single. Anderson led the way with two hits for UAB. Fowler and Will Plattner each had three hits for Alabama with Fowler adding 2 runs and two RBI. Torres and Snell had two hits each for the Crimson Tide.
