A week before UFL coaches are set to report to training camp in Arlington, Texas, Co-Offensive Coordinator Philip Montgomery was announced to be the next offensive coordinator at Virginia Tech. In a press release published earlier this month from the Birmingham Stallions, Montgomery was also set to coach the Stallions’ running backs and tight ends during the 2025 season.

Montgomery responded to Virginia Tech football’s X/Twitter announcement with a quote tweet of his own, “Joining Virginia Tech Football is a dream come true! Excited to be a Hokie and make Blacksburg home!!”

The announcement came public on Monday morning, as Montgomery will head to Blacksburg to work under Head Coach Brent Pry. Montgomery was set to begin his second season in Birmingham in 2025 and will provide a wealth of knowledge and elite coaching experience to the Hokies’ program. Prior to his tenure with the Stallions, Montgomery was the offensive coordinator at Auburn during Hugh Freeze’s first season on the Plains in 2023. Other coaching stops at the college ranks include the head coaching job at Tulsa for eight seasons (2015-2022) and then offensive coaching positions at both Baylor and Houston from 2003-2014.

A native of the Dallas area, Montgomery played college football at Tarleton State from 1990-93, and began his coaching career at TSU as a student assistant in 1994. After spending a few seasons as an offensive coordinator throughout several high schools in Texas, Montgomery made the switch over to college coaching in 2003 at Houston to serve as the quarterbacks and running backs coach under Art Briles.

Head Coach Skip Holtz and newly hired General Manager Paul Roell look to fill in the vacant coaching position on the Stallions’ staff just prior to the start of training camp in Arlington. UFL coaches will report to the league’s training camp sometime early next week, with the Stallions’ first game of the 2025 season just over a month away on March 30 against the D.C. Defenders at Audi Field in Washington, D.C. The Stallions will not have a home game until Week 3 of the UFL season when they welcome the Arlington Renegades to Protective Stadium on April 11.
